Burundi
Overview
WFP food aid reaches more than 1.5 million vulnerable persons in Burundi, a monthly average of around 3,546. WFP Logistics together with numerous partners delivers and distributes approximately 42million MT of food.
Team
The Burundi office has 33 logistics staff, both international and local officers.
Activities
Port Operations
Two corridors, namely the northern corridor (Mombasa-Kampala-Kigali-Burundi) and the southern corridor (Dar Es Salaam-Isaka-Burundi) are used to transport food commodities from overseas to Burundi.
Approximately 40% of deliveries come through the northern corridor, while the rest come through the southern corridor. Customs procedures are relatively simplified and may take no more than 2 working days, as WFP has benefited from the Government’s pre-clearance procedures (Enlèvement Authorisé).
Storage
As for storage, WFP’s overall capacity in Burundi amounts to 17,000 MT. To enhance storage capacity WFP has installed 26 mobile warehouses (Wiikhalls) within rented warehouse premises.
The main WFP warehouses are situated in Bujumbura( 5,000 MT) and Ngozi (10,000 MT).Bujumbura warehouse is located at the Industrial area, about 3 km from the port. It's well equipped and managed by trained staff.

Surface Transport
The internal transport in Burundi is done exclusively by road, however the local transport capacity is limited. In order to fill the gap in the available local transport capacity, WFP runs its own strategic fleet of 46 trucks with total capacity of 573MT classified in the following categories :
• Category 6×4 : 26 trucks,
• Category 6×6 : 10 trucks, out of which 7 trucks have been loaned out to DRC
• Category 4×4 : 4 trucks
• Category 4×2 : 6 trucks (Dyna)
Burundi is landlocked. Possible borders, border entries points are Kanyaru (Kayanza Province), Kobero (Muyinga Province), Ruhwa (Cibitoke Province), Gisuru (Ruyigi Province), Gatumba (Bujumbura), Nyanza-Lac (Makamba Province) and Kabonga. Borders are opened from 6h00 to 18h00.
Once the cargo arrives at the border it is sealed and the driver presents an original and acopy of DTDR(Déclaration de Transit Douanière par Route) to the customs. The copy isstamped and the original is sealed in envelope called P.A.C. (Passavant à Caution) to bepresented to the custom officers at the entry of Bujumbura town.
Rail
WFP does not use rail services in Burundi.
Aviation
Currently there are no aviation services in Burundi.
