Zambia
Overview
Zambia being a landlocked country is dependent on road, rail and to a lesser extent water transport network in terms of movement of goods.
Team
Between the head office and sub offices, there are approximately 20 Logistics staff in Zambia.
Activities
Port Operations
100% of the international cargo is transshipped through Lusaka to various destinations as per programme requirements. For local purchase, logistics arranges delivery to EDP straight from the supplier warehouse where there is a Free Carrier (FCA) contract and where applicable.
Storage
The two largest storage facilities WFP utilizes are in Lusaka and Ndola. Other smaller facilities are in Mayukwayukwa, Mporokoso, Ukwimi, Kala, Meheba and Nangweshi.
Road Transport
The main roads include the great north road which runs from the southern tip of the country to the Zambia – Tanzania border. The Country also has the great east road which runs from Central Zambia to the Eastern part of the Country. Besides the two major roads, the country also has several navigable road network which includes Chirundu -Lusaka road, Lusaka -Mongu road, and Kapiri – Mansa road to mention a few but not the list.
Rail
Zambia also has a railway transport network which stretches from Livingstone in Southern province to Kitwe which is up north of the country. Water is also the most common mode of transport in the northern part of the country because of the presence of navigable lakes such as lake Tanganyika (shared by three Countries – Lake Tanganyika is also a get way to the Great lakes region) and Lake Mweru.
Aviation
There are currently no aviation services in Zambia.
