Lybian Arab Jamahiriya
The Libyan corridor: From the port of Benghazi, food is supplied to to Chad by truck convoys through the Sahara desert (2800 km). About 40 percent of food required for Chadian operations is supplied through this corridor.
Due to overhaul of finance and administrative procedures and mainly because of security incidents in Al Khoufra and north-eastern Chad, dispatches from Libya, which were scheduled to resume in October 2008 only started in late December 2008. Military escorts combined with WFP presence had to be put place to ensure the resuming of dispatches from Libya. After the first few convoys, operation resumed at a more normal pace and security escorts are no longer to be organized by WFP since Libyan transporters put their own system in place.
In total since December 2008, 18 convoys (12 from Khufra and 6 directly from Benghazi) carrying some 36'187MT have been dispatched to Chad.
