Overview
The Mali Logistics operation is based in the capital, Bamako, liaising with sub-offices located in five regions throughout the country, namely Kayes, Mopti, Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal.

Team
The WFP Logistics team numbers approximately 55 including the head office and sub-offices.

Activities
Port operations
Mali is a landlocked country and receives its international purchases through two main corridors: Lome (Togo) and Dakar (Senegal).

Storage
Mali Warehouses are located in all regions including the capital region of Koulikoro (Bamako).

Surface Transport
The CO relies mainly on commercial transporters for commodity transport, although FDPs within close proximity to the warehouses may be served by a WFP truck. The offices in Bamako, Mopti, Timbuktu and Gao each have a 7 MT truck at their disposal.
The main logistics challenge in country is the vastness of the country (1.2 million km2, two times the size of France) combined with an inadequate infrastructure. The FDPs are often located far apart and close to inaccessible areas; furthermore, distances are long and quantities relatively small. Roads are in many areas non-existent, and the situation worsens during and immediately following the rainy season (June - September), when some roads become inaccessible. In addition to transport carried out by road, there is also river transport which is used mainly in the regions of Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu.

Rail
WFP does not use rail services in Mali

Aviation
There are currently no Aviation services in Mali.
