Afghanistan

UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) provides safe and efficient air transport and cargo services for the humanitarian community within Afghanistan as well as internationally to Islamabad and Dushanbe (Tajikistan) with a fleet of 3 aircraft. UNHAS air services in the country are mainly provided to United Nations Departments Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), through refuelling and ground handling service for their operations. From January to September 2009, UNHAS Afghanistan has transported more than 30,600 passengers and 660 metric tons of cargo in about 2,400 flight hours.

Afghanistan faces enormous recovery needs after close to two decades of war, civil unrest and recurring natural disasters. Military action continues in the southern and eastern parts of the country and now in the west, in an attempt to counter the increasing activities of elements opposed to the fledgling Afghan government, prompting population displacement. In spite of growing insecurity that has seriously restricted the movement of humanitarian staff in many parts of the country, WFP remains operational in most parts of Afghanistan.
