Pakistan
Overview
Pakistan is a country which is vulnerable to natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes. In addition, increasing political instability is complicating relief efforts and hampering logistics operations. While WFP within the country itself is running five different projects, Pakistan is also a major entry point for food intended for Afghanistan.
Team
The Logistics team in WFP Pakistan counts six international and seven national Logistics Officers.
Activities
Port Operations
Pakistan has two sea ports: Port Qasim and Karachi Port. WFP uses both of these ports to receive cargo for Afghanistan and Pakistan projects.
Storage
Chatterplain and Muzzafarabad warehouses (mobile storage tents) were set up during the emergency operation following the 2005 earthquake. WFP Logistics later upgraded the structures to meet WFP standards and since then they have been to for both air and overland transportation.
In particular two logistics hubs, in Peshawar and in Quetta, are used for storage of food commodities intended for Afghanistan. The Pirpai warehouse in Peshawar is currently being upgraded to cater for the ever increasing volume of operations both for Afghanistan and Pakistan projects.
Surface Transport
Road is the major mode of transportation within Pakistan. From ports of entry to all provincial extended distribution points (EDPs) and then to final delivery points (FDPs), trailers and trucks are used. Limited local transport capacity, lack of knowledge of the terrain, difficult terrain in the mountainous region as well as security risks sometimes complicate surface transport operations. WFP is using small vehicles; 4 x 4 Jeeps, Shehzores and Gattus, for transportation of food commodities to areas not accessible by big vehicles.
Rail
WFP does not use rail for surface transport in Pakistan.
Aviation
There are currently no aviation operations in Pakistan.
WFP Logistics Service Provision
WFP Logistics is currently providing storage space and transportation services to FAO and UNICEF.
